Do I need a referral to be seen at Piedmont?

It depends on your insurance plan.

Insurance can be a complicated process to navigate. We have seen quite a few changes over the past year and we can expect a lot more changes to come. One trend that is causing quite a few of our patients grief is the fact that more and more insurance plans are now requiring a referral to see a specialist such as an orthopaedic surgeon, neurosurgeon or podiatrist.

Our physicians do not require a referral to treat a patient, however, your plan may have specific requirements if you want the visit to be covered. Some plans require a pre-authorization from your insurance company which is obtained through a referral from your primary care doctor. That pre-authorization may only cover a certain body part or physician and may only be good for a certain time period or number of visits. It is important to remember that insurance plans can change each year and vary widely. Some plans do not require a referral at all. It is ultimately up to each patient to understand his or her plan’s current requirements, but our knowledgeable staff is happy to help you.

If you are interested in making an appointment but are not sure if your insurance plan requires a referral, please give our staff a call. Not only does our New Patient Coordinator do an excellent job of helping patients get set up with a convenient appointment with the right specialist, she can also help you navigate any requirements your insurance plan has before making an appointment. Our goal is to make the process as hassle-free as possible so you can get better and get back to your life faster.
